Dr Arnaud Duranel to speak at Hydrogeology of Peat meeting

Dr Arnaud Duranel, Senior Ecologist at Thomson Ecology will be speaking at the National Meeting organised by the Geological Society and the British Hydrological Society, on the Hydrogeology of Peat, at the University of Birmingham on 7th July.

The title of Arnaud’s talk is “Integrated hydrological modelling of valley mires in hard-rock regions: application to water balance estimation and impact assessment of catchment afforestation in a mire of the Massif Central, France.”

Water storage and movement within peat plays a fundamental role in some key environmental issues including the sustainability of carbon storage in peatlands, the hydrological response of uplands with reference to flood risk management, and maintenance and restoration of rare wetland plant communities. The aim of the meeting is to bring together mire (peatland) hydrologists and hydrogeologists to identify and discuss common themes, methods and concepts.

Arnaud has over fifteen years’ experience in ecology and hydrology gained in a range of non-governmental and academic organisations in both France and the UK. He has an expert knowledge of wetland ecology, hydrogeology, management, restoration and creation.

As well as working as a Senior Ecologist specialising in wetlands at Thomson Ecology, Arnaud is an associate researcher at the University of Lyon, and a member of the Society of Wetland Scientists, the British Hydrological Society, the International Association of Hydrogeologists and the French Mire
Research Group.
