Barn owl box installation

This week we have supplied and installed 5 barn owl boxes on a former RAF base and training ground in Gloucestershire.

Our client required the installation as part of their mitigation works because areas of the site are being developed for new housing.

The boxes were mounted on 6 metre high poles, and we followed the Barn Owl Trust’s specifications for the installation. Due to the sensitive nature of the site, and the presence of hibernating reptiles, tracked low ground pressure machinery was used to reduce disturbance.

Barn owls have traditionally nested in tree hollows and caves, but as their name suggests, they now often use barns and other buildings. They prey on small mammals which are mostly found in rough grassland, which is becoming scarcer as grassland is increasingly more intensively grazed or cut.
