Water Framework Directive

The Water Framework Directive (WFD) came into force in 2000 and requires EU Member States to ensure that all inland and coastal waters achieve ‘good’ water quality status by 2015. EU Member States must:

The ultimate aim of the WFD is for all water bodies to achieve “good status”.

The WFD must be taken into account in the planning and licensing of all new activities in water bodies (rivers, estuaries and coastal waters). The Environment Agency (EA) requires that all new navigation dredging and construction activities located within designated water bodies have a WFD assessment prior to the commencement of works. This must be submitted to the EA who will make a decision on whether the works can proceed without having a negative impact on the objectives of the WFD.

Water Framework Directive

Thomson Unicomarine has undertaken WFD assessments for construction projects, and maintenance and capital dredge campaigns in line with EA guidelines. Our marine consultants can provide expert advice on the assessment process or carry out the assessment for you.
