Wind farm developments
Thomson Ecology have carried out numerous surveys for wind farm developers.
We have a large team of ecologists throughout the UK with a wide range of relevant experience. This includes the ecological input to EIAs and habitat and protected species surveys.
Of particular importance are bat and bird surveys, including vantage point surveys and collision risk modelling.
When developing a wind farm site, ecological issues are a serious consideration. Choose the right site and these can be minimised. Choose the wrong site and the costs and opposition to the development can be considerable.
Thomson Ecology carry out initial site assessments to give you an idea as to which sites are more ecologically suitable for development. More detailed surveys for EIA and planning purposes can then be carried out as required.
By carrying out more detailed surveys, we are able to advise on the ecological aspects of wind farm design. Often simple changes can be incorporated that allow the development to proceed with minimal impact upon the habitats and species. This reduces costs all round.
Our team of over 50 ecologists holds all the relevant protected species licences.
Most specific to wind farms are our bat licence holders, ornithologists and, for off-shore wind farms, our sea mammal specialism. We have a depth of experience in these areas and are able to advise accordingly. Vantage point surveys, collision risk modelling, breeding, wintering and nocturnal birds surveys are key components of our work in this area.
If necessary, we are able to represent you at a Public Inquiry as expert witnesses and provide proofs of evidence.
However, when clients have followed our advice closely, biodiversity issues have never been a reason for refusal of planning permission.
Similarly, when clients have adopted our recommendations, we have had a 100% success rate for obtaining protected species licences.
We hope that we can help you with your project.
