Terrestrial invertebrate surveys and identification

Terrestrial invertebrate surveys and identification

Thomson Ecology conducts cost-effective terrestrial invertebrate surveys followed by laboratory identification. We identify invertebrates down to species level by their morphological characteristics.

Our invertebrate specialists have many years experience from a variety of entomological backgrounds to provide expertise on a variety of taxonomic groups. They undergo continual internal and external training annually and operate within our internal Analytical Quality Control (AQC) procedures.

57 invertebrate species in the UK are legally protected and hundreds of invertebrate species receive planning policy protection. Local Authorities must have full knowledge of protected species present on a site before granting planning permission. Invertebrate surveys can be used to assess the quality of habitats (by applying statistical analysis) and also play an important role in EcIA’s, long-term conservation studies and informing habitat management.

We employ a number of collection and search techniques depending on the species and the habitat being surveyed. These range from sweep netting, beating, suction sampling, pitfall trapping to deadwood searching and light trapping for moths.

We also carry out survey and I.D. work for aquatic invertebrates.
