Managed coastal re-alignment

Managed coastal re-alignment

Thomson Ecology works closely with engineers to survey habitats and species prior to coastal re-alignment works. We can then design and create suitable coastal habitats once the sea defences are breached.

After hundreds of years of fending of flooding and the encroaching sea, a degree of acceptance of coastal erosion is dawning.

Working with nature, managed coastal realignment projects are increasingly being undertaken instead of coastal protection measures. Concrete bulwarks are being abandoned in some low lying areas and replaced by habitat restoration programmes, such as the flooding of agricultural lands to create salt marsh or mudflats once the sea defences are breached.

Re-alignment can be an attractive option for a number of reasons. It is less costly than constructing walls or barriers and it can also create a rich habitat for wildlife, thus bringing environmental benefits to the area.  The creation of a larger intertidal habitat is also believed to provide a natural flood defence barrier, so that the hinterland is more fully protected from further flooding.

Thomson Ecology employs specialists in coatal ecosystems  who can advise on sensible and practical measures to be taken in order to create successful and sustainable coastal habitats. Our sister company, Thomson Habitats, are knowledgeable ecological contractors who can work closely alongside us to deliver the required ground works required to develop the wetland habitat.
