Freshwater Invertebrate Surveys and Identification

Freshwater Invertebrate Surveys and Identification

Thomson Ecology conducts cost-effective invertebrate surveys followed by laboratory analysis and ID, primarily for biological water quality assessments but also for baseline data for use in Environmental Impact Assessments.

Biological water quality assessments use standard indices of invertebrate biodiversity to determine levels of freshwater pollution and other human influences on streams and rivers. These indices form measures of nature conservation value. They are used to measure compliance with the Water Framework Directive and also form part of surveys of rivers and ponds in planning applications.

Thomson Ecology employs freshwater ecology specialists. We conduct cost-effective freshwater species surveys, followed by sieving, sorting, identification and counting of species in our laboratory. Our team are very familiar with BMWP (Biological monitoring working party) scoring, AWIC (Acid water indicator community) score and LIFE (Lotic invertebrate index for flow evaluation).

We can also carry out species specific invertebrate surveys, primarily for use as baseline data in Environmental Impact Assessments.
