Ecological Mitigation

Ecological Mitigation

There are strict guidelines outlining when ecological mitigation activities for protected species can take place.

Our recommendation is always to take ecology into account from the start of a project. This enables you to reduce, and sometimes avoid, the expense and delay of ecological mitigation measures. Carry out ecological surveys early in the programme and you will get a clearer idea of what mitigation measures may be required or, with slight adjustments to plans, can be avoided.

Ecological mitigation plans

Well designed mitigation plans are important. They will, by their very nature, be site specific. Poorly designed plans are unlikely to gain the approval of the regulatory bodies as they may not result in conservation of the species on site.

Increasingly, there is a requirement to not only maintain species and habitats but to also enhance the biodiversity.

We design and develop workable and cost-effective enhancement schemes that meet these requirements.

Protected species development licences

Where mitigation is required, it is important to note that often this needs to be carried out under licence from the appropriate regulatory body (eg, Natural England) and with the involvement of an experienced, professional ecologist.

We can advise you on your licence requirements and complete the application on your behalf. We have had 100% success rate on obtaining licences when a client has closely followed our advice.

It is important to note that once the licence is obtained, it must be followed to the letter, otherwise you could be seen to be in breach of the licence conditions.

Ecological mitigation timing

As with ecological surveys, some mitigation activities can only be carried out at certain times of year.

Our mitigation calendar gives you an idea as to when mitigation for different protected species can occur. For specific advice, please speak to one of our ecological consultants directly.

Ecological mitigation works

We work closely with our sister company, Thomson Habitats, to provide you with a complete ecological solution- from initial planning advice through to surveys, ecological mitigation plans, wildlife habitat creation and restoration.

By offering you this integrated ecological solution, we can provide an efficient, cost effective service whilst ensuring that quality standards are maintained. It also means that you have fewer contractors to work with and fewer headaches to deal with- no danger of one contractor blaming the other for any shortcomings.
