10 tips to improve biodiversity in your organisation

10 tips to improve biodiversity in your organisation

1. Bird and bat boxes on trees and buildings are easy to install and can make a huge difference to the wildlife on your site. Specialist boxes can encourage different species.

2.  Bird feeders: at certain times of year these can provide an invaluable source of food for local birds.

3.  Native species of plants and trees are not only attractive but can form the basis to a wildlife habitat by encouraging invertebrates, birds and bats.

4.   Wildflower meadows encourage bees and other insects. They are attractive, easy to manage and can save costs of mowing.

5.   Wildlife ponds can encourage dragon and damsel flies, frogs and other animals. Tranquil water is also attractive to staff in their lunch breaks!

6.   Hibernacula are stone or log piles where lizards and other small animals can shelter inside or sunbathe on top. Place these in quiet areas to encourage reptiles.

7.   Do you have space for a patch of woodland? Native woodland can provide natural shade and is also a haven for wildlife.

8.   When developing new buildings, build biodiversity in at the design stage - not only in the landscaping but also by incorporating bird and bat bricks and tiles and living roofs.

9. If you don’t have grounds, consider window boxes and tubs planted with native flowers to attract bees and butterflies.

10. Get involved with a wildlife charity. There are many that welcome the involvement of business either in the form of sponsorship, staff volunteering days or similar initiatives.
