Biodiversity is good for business
6th July 2010
Biodiversity is good for business.
Just a reminder...2010 is the Year of Biodiversity. Enhance biodiversity and you enhance your reputation.
Here's a few tips to get you started:
1. Do you have bird and bat boxes on your trees and buildings?
These are easy to install and can make a huge difference to the wildlife on your site. Specialist boxes can encourage different species.
2. How about bird feeders? A certain times of year these can provide an invaluable source of food for local birds.
3. Are you planting native species of plants and trees to encourage invertebrates, birds and bats? Native plants are not only attractive but also form the basis to a wildlife habitat by encouraging insects which in turn encourage birds and bats.
4. Do you have room for a patch of wildflower meadow to encourage bees and other insects? Wildflower meadows are attractive and easy to manage.
5. Can you install a wildlife pond? A pond can encourage dragon and damsel flies, frogs and other animals. Tranquil water is also attractive to employees in their lunch breaks!
6. Do you have a quiet area where you could create hibernacula for lizards? These stone or log piles offer hiding places to lizards and other small animals and room for them to sunbathe.
7. Do you have space for a patch of woodland? Native woodland can provide natural shade and is also a haven for wildlife.
8. Have you considered biodiversity as part of your new build design? If you are developing new buildings, biodiversity can be built in at the design stage- not only in the landscaping but also by incorporating bird and bat bricks and tiles, living roofs etc.
