Eyebrow-raising jumpers and onesies raise cash for YMCA

Staff from some of the cutting-edge science firms in Guildford donned onesies for a local charity, as reported in the Surrey Advertiser.

On Friday 20th December, those working on the Surrey Research Park also broke out their Christmas jumpers to raise money for the YMCA.

The event was the idea of Leanne Wall, an ecologist at Thomson Ecology, who is training for the London Marathon. “The YMCA is such a worthwhile charity and I am keen to get as many people locally to support it as possible”, she said.

“Its role is particularly highlighted at Christmas when so many young people are homeless and need somewhere safe and warm to stay. As a company, Thomson Ecology already does a lot of work to support young people in the workplace and operates a successful graduate training scheme.

“As part of our 10-year anniversary programme of activities, we shall be supporting Guildford YMCA during the whole of 2014”.

Pete Brayne, chief executive of Guildford YMCA, said: “There is growing demand for housing homeless young people, the majority of whom are under 18,” he said. “Most have no qualifications and lack social skills, so are very unlikely to find employment unless they receive help.”

“These issues are highlighted at Christmas when we look after young people who have nowhere to go.”
