When should I first seek the advice of an ecologist?
An ecologist should be contacted as early as possible in a development project, ideally before the land is purchased and definitely before the development design is completed.
Early involvement of an ecologist will help you to minimise adverse impacts on biodiversity, and therefore reduce the amount of money that you will have to spend on ecological surveys and mitigation. The ecologist will also be able to help you develop your project programme, so that the seasonal nature of the surveys and mitigation can be taken into account and the impact of on the project programme can be lessened.
Features that provide a benefit to biodiversity can also be more readily incorporated into the development if considered at an early stage. This is important because Government policy is that all new developments should enhance biodiversity.
