How much time should I allow in my project programme for ecology surveys to be completed?

How much time should I allow in my project programme for the ecology surveys to be completed?
The answer to this question depends very much on the nature of the site. For small sites with limited biodiversity interest, just one day at any time of the year may be sufficient. However, for many sites, surveys will be required for a variety of species. In this situation, it is best to allow a full survey season, from March through to September, or if wintering birds are likely to be an issue, a full 12 months may be required. The time of year that the ecology surveys start can influence how long it takes for the surveys to be completed; undertaking the initial survey in March or April will give you the best chance of completing the surveys in less than 12 months.
