The Environment Agency

Thomson Ecology has surveyed 660 river sites for the Environment Agency as part of the national baseline River Habitat Survey (RHS) programme.

Under the Water Framework Directive, the Environment Agency is looking at ways to re-naturalise  rivers. By considering the whole of the river catchment area, including its floodplains, more informed planning, conservation and development decisions will be able to be made at all levels- from regional to local.

RHS is a technique developed by the Environment Agency to rapidly assess the habitats present in and around watercourses at both a national and regional level. The sites that Thomson ecologists surveyed were located throughout East Anglia, Wales, Surrey, Sussex and Yorkshire. This provided for quite contrasting habitats…from clear mountain brooks to culverted drains running under the M25!

We were praised for both our efficiency and the quality of our surveys.
