Introducing our new Water Framework Directive infographic

The Water Framework Directive, or WFD, came into force in December 2000. Its purpose is to establish a framework for the protection of inland surface waters (rivers and lakes), transitional waters (estuaries), coastal waters and groundwater, and requires that EU waterbodies achieve good ecological and chemical status, as set by Environment Agency targets.
